Valve Stem Packing: Selection & Installation
Valve stem leakage is regulated because it is a major source of fugitive emissions. Standards such as ISO 15848-1 and API 622/624 define allowable stem leakage classes — so packing choice and installation decide whether a valve passes.
Material choices
- Die-formed graphite rings — consistent density, low leakage, fire-safe; the workhorse for emission-critical valves.
- Braided graphite — field-adjustable, good for general service.
- PTFE — for chemical valves at moderate temperature; lower emission tightness than graphite.
Design details that matter
- Live-loading (spring washers) holds gland stress as packing relaxes — the key to staying within leakage limits.
- Stem finish and hardness: a smooth, hard stem reduces wear and leakage paths.
- Oxidation-inhibited graphite for high-heat and steam service.
Installation
- Fit die-formed sets square; torque to the maker's spec in stages.
- Break in by cycling the valve, then re-check after a thermal soak.
